I’m a veteran. I served in the US Navy, mostly sea duty with coastal excursions. I had two Westpac deployments to Vietnam but also served in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean on special assignment. I’ve spent one Christmas in Mombasa and another in Olongapo and, of course, even more holidays aboard ships at sea. I completed my obligation and got out with an Honorable Discharge and a few combat ribbons. To this day, I hold no respect for guys who got kicked out or accepted a General Discharge/Dishonorable Discharge just so they could return to Podunk, Louisiana to watch HBO on their mama’s couch.
If you don’t volunteer for combat, then you don’t deserve the honor of serving. Why would a coward enlist anyway? For a VA loan, maybe?
Some vets will lie about their service to make you think they are battle-hardened, both wise and tough beyond their years. I hate guys like that. They want you to think they have a backbone and served honorably so you’ll give them space and respect. They deserve neither.
Also, as far as I can see, PTSD is a scam. The VA will encourage you to file for PTSD disability but won’t tell you from that moment forward, you will forever be known as a headcase. A nutjob. That’s ok for most because headcases can receive up to $5000 a month.
Ha! I might be a headcase myself, but I’ll never admit it nor will I accept money for killing my country’s enemies. Hell, I’d have done that for free.
Well, it’s Memorial Day. Nobody gives a rat’s ass about me so I don’t have to worry about cooking for relatives or neighbors. I have a pint of Jack Black and a six-pack of Rolling Rock. There’s still a little weed left in the bottom of my stashbox so I’m all set. My hillbilly neighbors will have to listen to 60s and 70s classic rock blasting from my little piece of paradise this weekend.
I don’t care if they are perturbed. I’m going to honor my fallen friends all weekend long and I might even issue a one gun salute at midnight. Bless my buddies who did not come home. For those cowards who never did anything but complain about their headaches, stay away from me. I was a proper soldier/sailor and you weren’t.
Bless the fallen troops.
